Bing Tips & Tricks

Now that Bing is available for use outside Microsoft, here are some quick tips and tricks that will help you do more with Bing.com.
1. Use the full version of Bing
If you are using Bing outside North America, chances are that you seeing a localized version of Bing that may be missing some features. For instance, the Indian version of Bing.com doesn’t have search history and the image on the Bing home page here is not interactive as in the US version.
To explore the full version of Bing, go to this page and set English - US as your default region. You can now enjoy all the Bing features from anywhere.
2. Track Companies from the IE Favorites Bar
If you search for a company stock (e.g. GOOG or MSFT), Bing will automatically create aweb slice for that company which you may then add to IE 8 and track the performance directly from the favorites bar. You need Internet Explorer 8 to try this feature.

3. Watch Preview of Hulu Videos outside US
Hulu hosts some popular popular TV shows but the problem is that you can only watch these videos if your computer has US based IP address.
However, Bing lets you watch shot previews of Hulu video even outside US. Just search for any TV show episode on Bing Videos (see example) and hover the mouse over any of the video thumbnail to watch a short clip.
4. Save and Email search results
With Bing, you can save your search history on to a local folder inside Bing or to your Windows Skydrive account. Alternatively, you may send your search queries to a friend via email or publish them on your Facebook wall via Bing. You’ll need Silverlight to share queries in Bing.

5. RSS Feeds of Search Results
Unlike Google or Yahoo, Bing offers RSS feeds for their web search results that you can subscribe to inside any feed reader. Your browser should be able to auto-detect the RSS feed of Bing pages or you can append &format=rss to any Bing search URL and convert it into a feed.
This RSS feature is not available for Image or Video search in Bing.
6. Find Pages That Link to MP3 Files or Documents
Bing (and Live Search) supports a unique "contains" search operator that lets you find web pages that contain links to particular file types.
For instance, a search like susan boyle contains:mp3 will show pages that are about the British singer and that also link to MP3 files. Replace mp3 with doc to search pages that contain links to Word Documents

Asphalt 4: Elite Racing Tech

Asphalt 4: Elite Racing Tech

Publisher:
Gameloft
Developer:
Gameloft
Genre:
Driving
  • If you are a fan of racing games like Need for Speed or Colin McRae Rally Mac, you will feel right at home with Gameloft’s Asphalt 4: Elite Racing on the iPhone or iPod touch. Packed with 28 different licensed cars and bikes from companies like Ferrari, BMW, Kawasaki, Ford, and Bugatti, Asphalt 4 offers a vehicle for every personality. With a plot similar to the movie The Fast and Furious, you enter races around the world and hope to become the top street racer. You can win trophies, but money is the real prize, as how much cash you have affects your street reputation. You earn cash by knocking out other drivers, beating cops and causing mayhem and destruction around the cities in which you race.
You can unlock five different race modes:
    • Race – a standard three lap race against seven opponents.
    • Cash Attack – the car who earns the most cash in three laps wins.
    • Cop Chase – work to the front of the pack and takedown the leader within three laps.
    • Beat Em’ All – perform six takedowns within three laps.
    • Duel – make a bet and then beat one opponent in a two lap race.

The different modes add depth to the game play and prevent repetition in the game; it’s not simply boring laps around tracks. The well-done game music features simple catchy melodic tracks that aren’t annoying. You can listen to your own music in Asphalt 4, however headphones with a play and pause button, such as the default pair included with the iPhone, must be used in order to turn on your desired playlist.

    Features

Racers are given three different steering options, a motion-based tilt method, one that involves tapping on the side of the screen, which corresponds with the desired turning direction, and a third that displays an on-screen steering wheel that can be turned by dragging a finger over it. In all of these schemes, acceleration is a constant and players have no control. I had the best experience using the accelerometer based tilt controls. Unfortunately, this layout has one flaw, if there is no touch input while playing the screen dims and turns off. You can avoid this if you use the boost button instead of tilting for boost, but I think the accelerometer-based controls should be able to work without any additional input commands. An exciting feature is the Wi-Fi multiplayer option, although I did not have a chance to test how well it works. This addicting game has lots hidden items to unlock; not to mention stunning graphics with localized details. For the most part races run smoothly but occasionally when there is a lot of on-screen activity, the game play becomes choppy.

    Minor Bugs

As you progress through Asphalt 4 you can choose new cars and parts for tuning and personalizing your ride, plus move through levels. All of the cars feature three different paint schemes, which generally worked fine but occasionally the color list is inaccurate. For example, the red Corvette ZRI option actually turned yellow. The options screen layout is another issue I have with car modifications. The screen feels very cramped and makes modifications difficult. I tried using both the portrait and landscape layouts, and think they both waste a lot of screen space that can be put to better use.

BRAIN TESTER 24

                 TO DOWNLOAD THIS GAME
In the (slightly altered) words of Frank Sinatra: brain training games, we've had a few, but then again, too few to mention.

And it's all Nintendo's fault. Since Dr Kawashima's Brain Training sold about 20 billion copies on DS, every other publisher on earth has tried to get in on the act.

But at least Brain Tester 24 Pack: Vol 2 (we previously reviewed the original Brain Tester 24 Pack) tries to present its particular brand of intelligence-bolstering mini-games in a different way to the rest. Instead of giving you games to play through in order to determine your brain age, or IQ level, Brain Tester has you evolving your own creature by doing well. So, the better you do in observational games for instance, the more your creature's eyes will evolve.

It's a far more satisfying system than the norm – after all, there are only so many times you can be told you have the brain age of a 50-year-old. And besides, any belief you might have once held that these results are in any way scientifically accurate was probably dispelled when one game diagnosed a brain age of 35 and another of 70.

That said, there's still some disparity between Brain Tester's 24 different games. While some genuinely feel like a struggle on the ageing grey matter, others feel more like a test of how quickly you can work the keypad on your phone.

Games such as Explosion for instance, where you just have to move a cursor over the red speaker that's closest to more red or orange speakers and press '5' hardly feel like they're a test of your brain functionality. Perhaps they test the speed of your reactions, but, in practice, they're more about how quick you can navigate using your phone.

However, there are still lots of good mini-games included, and a huge variety too.

Some are similar to the kind you might have seen before in other titles. There's a shape selecting one, where you're shown the outline of a shape and have to select the same shape to fit through it from a selection, except these are often rotated to make it more difficult. There are maths offerings containing simple sums to solve against the clock, and there's a memory game where you look at a group of objects then have to identify which one has been subsequently removed.

But there are also entries that seem to be completely original. A great robot mini-game has you guiding a robot across a grid to a battery by putting instructions such as down x 2, up x 3 and right into the correct order, making sure you don't guide him off the edge of the grid.

There's also a fishing affair in which you rapidly have to decide whether a series of shapes on the screen match or don't match in order to lure a fish close to your hook, then press '5' when it's close enough to catch it.

In between the brain games, there's the usual selection of stat screens, which show how advanced your creature is becoming in line with your results. Pleasingly, he soon evolves from an egg with an eye peering from a hole in the shell, to an appealing ball of fluff. One that's hopefully intelligent enough to solve pure maths theories while juggling balls.

With the line-up of brain training games already so lengthy, Brain Tester 24 Pack: Vol 2 can only wedge itself in and hope for the best. However, with such a high standard of content, presentation and ideas, it deserves fast-tracking to the front of the queue. If you're after a brain training title with a bit of a twist, it's a no-brainer that this is for you
